It’s buried beneath us since I wrote the thesis
Man, it has been quite a while, hasn’t it?…well, perhaps the heat has been getting to me, or maybe I can place the blame on a bad case of the hiccups…but I’ll bypass the technicalities and get right into the fun things:
For the first time that I can recall, I went to a ‘concert’ without actually ever seeing the band that was performing…Y-Rock was part of a special promotion with Toyota and Free Yr Radio that brought the band The Rapture to the Urban Outfitters at 16th and Market…because of the, in my opinion, poor setup, we (the Y-Rock people) couldn’t see the band at all, so we just danced the whole time…for the first few songs, we were the only ones dancing, but we got other people to join us so that by the end, the place was a-jumpin’…it was a lot of fun, but I hope to see The Rapture (or !!! or maybe even the Gang Of Four if I’m lucky) another time…well, see them for the first time, really…
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see Hoots and Hellmouth’s Free At Noon concert because I was on the air from 11-3…I did, however, get to host my second ever Nooner (Y-Rock’s daily classic alternative hour)…I got to play a lot of stuff I haven’t heard on the radio in a while (or ever), like The Rainmakers, Beat Happening, Ass Ponys and Space…it was a lot of fun, and I hope to do it again sometime soon!
While I ducked out for a drink of water during my shift (and yes, I turned on Automation…), I saw that David Dye was doing a World Café interview with none other than Dave Wakeling of The (English) Beat…As soon as I was done with my shift, I went into the control room to hear the end of the interview and I got to meet Dave, who is, as his website declares, “a hell of a nice guy”…I talked to him about how I just saw The Beat featured on the VH1 show “Bands Reunited”…he was very personable and friendly, and one of the new World Café interns was just standing there, silent…so it makes me wonder, which is better: being ‘professional’ or being ‘hospitable’…I know you can be both, but it appears to me like there’s not as much of one as there was when I started there…oh well…
The Beat show that night was a lot of fun…I have some neat pictures (including Dave Wakeling standing on a money-covered stage) that I’ll put up maybe…Unfortunately, the kid who was on the break-down crew was a total knob and didn’t get me a setlist, but I think I’ll be able to get one later this week…
Earlier this week was my first Y-Rock music meeting (aside from the staff-wide one)…it was just me, Jim McGuinn (the program director), Josh T. Landow (the co-ordinations director and my ‘boss) and Joey O. (the music director)…I helped organize the current playlist categories and suggested a few songs, two of which were added…Jim also said some very nice things to me, like how he thinks that I ‘get it’ and how I understand why things work the way they do…That made me very happy, but it also made me think that some of the other XPN people who are my age (most of whom are new to their jobs) don’t understand why things are done, and aren’t taught anything but what to do and how to do it…certainly, it takes a lot less time to just give someone a sheet of instructions and tell them to just “do this,” but it’s a real shame that the work and experience appear to have become a lot less personal…again, oh well…
Saturday, Erin and I went to Elkins Perk…for a change, I didn’t see anyone that I knew in there (with the exception of the guy that works [and possibly lives] there)…we then went to High School Park, where Arts In The Park will be next Sunday…Odds are there will be plenty of people that I will know that will be there…
Sunday I was operating XPN’s control board while they broadcast from Jam On The River at Penn’s Landing…It was a good experience and Bruce Warren (XPN’s Program Director and a Chelder/Schuman family friend) was very impressed that I knew how to do just about everything that had to be done…I’ll also be sitting at the board tomorrow night as Joey O. broadcasts the Y-Rock On XPN show from McFadden’s at Citizens Bank Park…yeah yeah, Go Phillies…whatever…also, I’ll be at the board for The Folk Show’s portion of the Spring Fund Drive…possibly presented by Subaru…
Yesterday, Mom, Dad and I took Erin to go and see the new Pirates of the Caribbean film…personally, I liked it a lot…there were great references to the ride that only we got, and just all around piracy (which is always fun)…If I had to sum up the whole film in one word, I think it would be “ARRRRGGGGH!!”…yeah, definitely that…or maybe “barnacles”…
Did some laundry and ate some waffles today, and it’s a good thing I didn’t get them confused…
This Thursday, Dad and I (and I think our friend Steve, too) are goint to see Los Straitjackets with Big Sandy and The Iguanas at World Café Live…Saturday, Erin and I are going to see Calvin Johnson, formerly of Beat Happening…so much for only seeing bands with ‘Beat’ in their names…Los Beatjackets?…
That’s it…time for more lemonade and more Arcade Fire…

I said I see no joy
I see only sorry
I see no chance of your bright new tomorrow
So stand down Margaret
Stand down please
