So, in the time that I am NOT seeing LCD Soundsystem, I’ll tell you about the past few days…

Wednesday, Y-Rock was broadcasting from Citizens Bank Park, and I was back at the station manning the control board…usually, whoever does the 8-11 show stays and does the 11-12 hour on the stream (once the Y-Rock on XPN show is done)…because Joey O. (the DJ broadcasting from the ballpark) would not be able to get back in time, I did the 11-12 hour live…it was fun…what’s funny is that I got more IM’s from people then than I usually do during my regular day shift…maybe I’m a night owl at heart?…

Los Straitjackets were absolutely terrific…the band that opened for them, The Iguanas, were also really good and did some songs that I knew but didn’t realize were done by them…Big Sandy performed several songs with Los Straitjackets from their new album, Rock En Español Volume 1…he also did a few songs from another one of their vocal albums, Sing Along WIth Los Straitjackets…the show was just as great as I expected, and it made me want to play a song of theirs on Y-Rock the next day…

The next day, among other things, I played a song from Rock En Español Volume 1 on Y-Rock…Dan Reed (XPN’s music director and all-around cool guy) told me that I’m going to be paid to run the board during the fund drive and any other time I have to do so for XPN (excluding The Folk Show)…there will be several opportunities for me to run the board over the summer, and I hope that this is the beginning/continuation to a long relationship with XPN…I then went home and ate some pizza…to the best of my recollection, it was good…

Saturday, Erin and I went to see Calvin Johnson at the First Unitarian Church…Calvin used to be in a band called Beat Happening, who were an early indie/twee pop band…he also started K Records, a favorite of Kurt Cobain and an influential landmark of indie and alternative music (Modest Mouse recorded their debut EP with Calvin)…The girl that opened for him, Julie Doiron, was pretty good…think a cross between Erin McKeown and Patti Smith (if only for her hairstyle)…Calvin himself was interesting in a good way…not being as familiar with his material as Erin (though I venture to guess that few people are), I found myself intrigued as his disregard for musicianship and instead focusing on presentation and character…for the most part, it was just him singing and playing guitar with another guy who played drums (though said guy also played guitar and the hooter)…it was a good show, and Calvin sold me some buttons…

Though Sunday was Arts In The Park, it may just as well have been called Dogs In The Rain…due to inclement weather, the one band that I wanted to see (Cheltenham’s own on again-off again ska ensemble, Green Pepper), didn’t even get a chance to perform…The Folk Show that night was pretty tame, though Gene was kind enough to give me some extra copies of a few CD’s…namely, the new June Carter tribute and a new record from Porter Wagoner…yes, that Porter Wagoner…

Monday, I held the door open for The Puppini Sisters…it’s true, I’m such a gentleman…Though I didn’t get any songs added at the Y-Rock music meeting, I did help move things around in the playlist and got to hear some cool new music as well…one of the things I’ve been doing for Y-Rock is keeping track of each week’s playlist and how often songs are played…it’s cool to be such a close part to the process (not to mention the superfun Y-Rock folks)…

Yesterday, I had to go to the temp agency that’s going to be paying me for XPN board stuff…it was weird to have to fill out all that paperwork for a job that I’m going to do so infrequently, but hey, it’s a good start…After that was all done, I met Erin and we went to Cereality…man, cereal tastes so much better when it’s covered in malted milk balls and costs $3.99…mmmm…we went to Penn’s bookstore and pointed out some of their more questionable reading materials…we also thought of captions for a silly picture of Amy Winehouse in the Metro…needless to say, none of them got printed (and not just because we didn’t send them in)…

Last night was the XPN Philly Local salute to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band…featuring Jim Boggia, Matt Duke, Fooling April, Blue Sinatra, Ben Arnold and more, the performance was nothing short of delightful…I had a great picture taken with the guys from Fooling April, though I won’t give away what makes the picture so special until I get a hold of it…I got to talk to Jim, Matt, Ben and the guys from Fooling April after the show, and I thought to myself how cool it is that not only have I met these guys before, but they know who I am (and in some cases, they even know my name!)…If you weren’t there, or if you’re like me and can’t wait to hear it again, the concert will be broadcast during the Philly Local show on Tuesday, June 12th (the Philly Local show is every Tuesday at 9:00 pm eastern)…

Today, I answered exactly one phone call at the fund drive, and that’s more than enough for me…I’d rather be behind the scenes when it comes to that sort of thing…Also, it’s no secret now, but Erin and I didn’t end up going to see LCD Soundsystem at the TLA (presented by Subaru…or whatever)…At least I got to see James Murphy signing the wall last night as he and his waaay big amount of equipment were leaving from recording a World Café session…oh well…not like I’m never going to another concert…

So tomorrow I’m filling in for Mike on Y-Rock from 4-8 pm eastern, and then my regular shift on Friday from 3-7…after that, it’s Erin’s graduation party where I will get to meet (and most likely be shown off to/giggled at by her “crazy” friends)…

Next week in Boston!

Lyric of the Time:
Well you should see Polythene Pam
She’s so good looking
But she looks like a man
Well, you should see her in drag
dressed in a polythene bag
Yes you should see Polythene Pam
