Friday 5! Friday 5!

The Zutons – “Zuton Fever” from Who Killed…The Zutons?
You have to hand to it a band to throw their own name around so much on their debut…the jittery guitar riff, the droning bass and the mere presence of the saxophone makes this a classic tune from a band that people should care about a lot more…
Bat For Lashes – “What’s A Girl To Do?” from Fur And Gold
I’m still not sure whether or not I actually like this, the debut album from multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Natasha Khan. I’m torn between how much her voice sounds like Chan Marshall (otherwise known as Cat Power), and how much it sounds like Kate Bush or worse, Bjork…what’s making me lean more towards liking it is the odd instrumentation, like the heavy use of harpsichords and strings found throughout the album…
Genesis – “The Musical Box” from Nursery Cryme
Before you say anything, know that I am not at all a fan of what Phil Collins turned the prog heroes into…that said, Peter Gabriel sure knew how to spin a tale, if this 10½ minute album opener is any indication…I always found it interesting when bands have really long songs kick off their album, because it’s usually the long songs that close out records (like Meddle) or sides (like “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”)…weird…
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – “Underwater (You And Me)” from Some Loud Thunder
Unfortunately, these guys have a habit of writing songs that are totally infectious, and yet it’s impossible to think of who the band is until the song is over…with this song, for example, I have heard it (and likely even played it) on Y-Rock many times, but only when I listened to the whole album did I realize, “Wait, that’s who this is?”…they make great music, regardless, but maybe they should take a cue from Fujiya & Miyagi and spike their name into their next few singles…
Information Society – “Can’t Get Enough” from Synthesizer
The new release from the Minneapolis electronica masters features many oontzin’ tunes (as expected), but it also features this groovy swinger…with a hook reminiscent of Blondie’s “Call Me”, there’s a futuristic lounge vibe in its simplicity…not too far off from Stereolab or some of !!!’s calmer tunes…
