Friday 5 had the best Hannukah ever!

20/20 - “Yellow Pills” from 20/20
Long-lost power popsters 20/20 made impeccably catchy tunes in the vein of The Knack or Big Star…unfortunately, they didn’t attain anything like the success of those other groups…nonetheless, the new wave and noise implications from their debut album show how adventurous this Tulsa band was…nowadays, the three core members of the band run recording studios in three different cities…
The Jesus And Mary Chain - “Moe Tucker” from Munki
With their recent reunion, 1998’s Munki may no longer be the Mary Chain’s final album…almost like a retrospective of their entire career, Munki’s songs range from Psychocandy fuzz to the more sophisticated Stoned And Dethroned…with guest work from Hope Sandoval on this tribute to the Velvet Underground dummer, the brothers Reid show that they can do more than just make their amps squeal for 40 minutes, but that they can make some truly wonderful pop music…
The Foxboro Hot Tubs - “Highway 1” from Stop Drop And Roll!!!
While debate goes on as to whether or not the garage-rock revivalists are actually the members of Green Day incognito, the retro vibes of the group should be enough to make you like them no matter who they turn out to be…sure, on a few of the songs the singer might sound like Billie Joe, but the farfisa organs and ultra-tight harmonies make me think that the East Bay trio are doing a really good job of covering themselves up, if it is really them to begin with…
Adam Ant - “Desperate But Not Serious” from Friend Or Foe
In reality, the ‘Ants’ tag had pretty much been Stuart Goddard’s project from the start, the first proper solo outing from the new wave king had some of his biggest hits…with longtime collaborator Marco Pirrioni (formerly of Siouxie and the Banshees, currently of The Wolfmen) performing on and co-producing the record, this track helped to herald in a new sound from a fella who is just full of new sounds…
Vampire Weekend - “Mansard Roof” from Vampire Weekend
Sure, other blogs may be making a fuss about them as I type this, but the quirky, twee meets worldbeat makes this album a sure-fire hit for next year’s best-of list…as far as what a “Mansard Roof” is, look no further…
