Let’s have a Friday 5!
January 25th 2008 by E..
MGMT - “Time To Pretend” from Oracular Spectacular
Think of them as a cross between Animal Collective and something more listenable…with a buzzy keyboard and spacey synths, MGMT are the latest band to jump on the “physical album release after only offering a digital download” train…look what you’ve done, Radiohead!!
The Tiki Tones - “The Ghost And Mr. Chicken” from Mondo Drive-In
A medley of theme music from the 1966 cult favorite, the score was written by Vic Mizzy, best known for writing the “Addams Family” theme…it may come as no surprise that The Tiki Tones, a surf outfit, are more than qualified to take on the spooky yet campy tunes…the guys are certainly no strangers to camp, as a former guitarist of theirs is Josh “Shag” Agle…
eels - “Novocaine For The Soul” from Beautiful Freak
No, I don’t just like this band because their frontman’s name is E…that doesn’t hurt, though…”sputter out” is just what this song does, just not where you might expect it…this album is one of the few from the ‘90s that even a new wave guy like me can enjoy…
The Apples In Stereo - “We’ll Come To Be” from Tone Soul Evolution
From the power-pop revivalists’ second album, this comes way before leader Robert Schneider ever started supporting Stephen Colbert…come to think of it, I’m not entirely sure what that’s about…does that mean that, by association, The Apples In Stereo also have some sort of feud with The Decemberists?…can’t we all just get along?
The Beach Boys - “Amusement Parks U.S.A.” from Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)
I will still argue that The Beach Boys are one of the most misunderstood and underappreciated bands in history…by the time The Beatles released their 5th album, Help!, in 1965, Brian Wilson and the boys were already on this, their 10th…while their previous album, Today!, foreshadowed the more progressive structures of Pet Sounds, Summer Days has the guys already doing a return to form, especially on this ode to our country’s boardwalks and midways, as well as bigger hits “California Girls” and “Help Me, Rhonda”…
