An all-new Friday 5!!
February 2nd 2008 by E..
Tindersticks - “The Flicker Of A Girl” from The Hungry Saw
Fans of Stephin Merritt and Stuart Murdoch are likely already familiar with lead singer Stuart Staples’ jazzy baritone…on this song from their upcoming release, the English baroque outfit continues to showcase their affinity for uber-lyrical pop music…makes me wonder why more people aren’t familiar with The Beautiful South since all of these newer bands have been copping their style…
White Rabbits - “Kid On My Shoulders” from Fort Nightly
Though many people draw comparisons between this six-piece group and The Walkmen, White Rabbits feature a much more obvious rhythmic influence…along the lines of an amped-up Aztec Camera (with a little ska thrown in), there are tight harmonies and catchy hooks all around…not bad for a band that’s only been around since 2004…
Bob Mould - “Return To Dust” from District Line
The former Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman releases his new album in February, and the tone of the record is fresh and familiar, just like the music he made with his two previous projects…injecting some light electronica into the guitar-driven songs adds a pleasant and unexpected touch to the first record in three years from the college pop idol come elder statesman of rock…
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - “Real Emotional Trash” from Real Emotional Trash
Yes, new Stephen Malkmus is on the way…when March rolls around, worshippers of the ex-Pavement leader’s new psychedelic-indie project will rejoice…with almost every song over 5 minutes in length (including the 10 minute title track), Real Emotional Trash picks up where the ultra-tight Pig Lib left off (2005’s Face The Truth wasn’t technically a proper Jicks release)…hopefully I’ll be seeing Malkmus when he comes to town in March, until then I’ll prepare myself by listening to Wowee Zowee a whole bunch of times…
Hot Chip - “Bendable Poseable” from Made In The Dark
A definite stand-out on the new album from the DFA bot-rockers…employing the computer voice from their breakthrough single “Over & Over”, this song is as jagged and fun as any of the dance-y numbers on the record…the mellow tunes that hearken back to their debut, Coming On Strong, are also extremely enjoyable, making this album an easy addition to my Best Of list for 2008…
