Fly the patent flag

After class on Thursday, I took the shuttle back home and Mom and I went to visit Dad in the hospital…we stayed there for a good long time, and at the risk of making this blog too depressing, I didn’t want another hospital picture for Project 365…we got home a little after 7:00, but it really felt more like a million o’clock…

Day 171 - January 31st, 2008 Spill it out on the ragged floor

I don’t remember if I went to bed any earlier than usual, as that would likely throw off my sleep cycle…not that it isn’t already a bit out of whack…

Friday was a pretty fun time…XPN’s Free at Noon Concert featured Bob Mould, who was really good…it was just him an an electric guitar, which is always refreshing to see after so many whiny singer-songwriters with acoustic guitars…come to think of it, I haven’t actually seen too many whiny singer-songwriters in a while…I guess I better go to open mic nights more often…anyway…

Day 172 - February 1st, 2008 The Twentieth Century/Has not been particularly kind to me

After the show, I went back to my Y-Rock shift, and some other friends followed me back to the studio…the studio door faces the World Cafe Live backstage door, and someone was leaning against the Y-Rock door, holding it open…from the backstage door, out comes Bob Mould being led to his meet and greet by one of the World Cafe interns…As Bob turns the corner, he glances into the studio and looks right at me…I waved and said, “Hi, Bob Mould!”, and he smiled, waved back and said “How are you? I have to go sign things now, but I’ll be around a little later!”…as he walked off, the other people who were with me in the studio were somewhat taken aback by how nonchalantly I waved to him, and Lauren commented that the way he responded, you would have thought that he was talking to his neighbor…I don’t know why, but in that particular instance, I am very happy that I said something rather than just stare at him…after working with musicians for all these years, I realize that they get a lot of staring at, and just need a smile and a wave after a while…

Bob’s new album, District Line, is out tomorrow on Anti- Records (and is fantastic!)…

Next week’s Free at Noon show is already sold out, and it’s with Counting Crows…whatever…

I came home on Friday to find that Dad is home as well…he’s doing fine and has already done a billion drawings which can be seen in his blog

Saturday was a lazy sort of day, and with 15 minutes left in the evening, I calmly took that day’s picture…

Day 173 - February 2nd, 2008 a-one, a-twooo, a-three!

Who doesn’t love Tootsie Pops?…and not only that, but co-branding with Wawa?!…it’s out of control!!

Sunday night, after recording a Folk Alley show with Gene, I finished what could have been my next indefinitely-ending project for Y-Rock…We just got Rhino’s The Brit Box, a collection of Britpop from the ’80s and ’90s…In ‘celebration’ of this, I put all of the songs that we didn’t already have into our system so that they can be played during Britpop Week, which just so happens to coincide with XPN’s Winter Fund Drive…one of the premiums if you become a member will be The Brit Box, so you know what to do

I was shown on Friday where the best computer to use for ripping CD’s into the system is…the (terrifying) tech closet…the room controls and ensures that XPN is actually on the air, and contains many scary things that could theoretically have adverse effects on the station if flipped/switched/unplugged/breathed on incorrectly…the room is also very bright, but damned if that computer can’t rip CD’s faster than any other in the building…

Day 174 - February 3rd, 2008 Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space

…and that’s not even the half of it!…

I used the Temple recording studios for the first time today…ick…ProTools is no different than any editing program I’ve used before, and I don’t see myself using the studios there for too much editing…the sunny side, though, is that I saw this in the dining center after class:

Day 175 - February 4th, 2008 Let's get a shmear from Elmo and Melvin

I really don’t remember the last time I was in an Einstein Bros., but I used to go to one in Jenkintown with my grandparents all the time when I was little…that is, until a pet store moved in next door (Einstein Bros. left soon after)…there are already things of Einstein Bros. coffee in the dining center, a harbinger of the deliciousness that is to come…

…all the more reason to spend more time on Main Campus…

Concert rundown:
2/7 - Vampire Weekend @ First Unitarian Church
2/23 - Wilco & John Doe @ Tower Theater
3/28 - eels @ First Unitarian Church
(3/29 - Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks @ TLA…haven’t bought tickets yet, but I’m planning on doing so)
4/3 - Beach House & Papercuts @ The Barbary
4/10 - Hot Chip @ Starlight Ballroom

That should do it for now, but I’ll probably post my review of Hot Chip’s new album once it’s sent out in the Y-Rock eNewsletter a little later…

Lyric of the Time:
Same old tingle that I feel inside
And then that elevator starts its ride
Down and down I go
Round and round I go
Like a leaf caught in the tide
