“I’m sure more people would watch C-SPAN”

I have been trying to drink more juice…not sure why, but it could probably do me a lot better than drinking sody-pop all the time…As I was leaving class on Tuesday, I stopped to get some cranberry-grape juice at the little cafe in the Learning Center…Since I’ve seen Brian Regan’s stand-up routine, I can’t help but think that cranberries overstep their bounds when it comes to mixing in with other drinks…it should come as no surprise then, that the cranberry-grape juice made its way into a cup of Coca-Cola…it reminded me of when my family used to make sodas and egg creams (for some reason, during Passover)…

Day 176 - February 5th, 2008 You got pork chops? Cran-chops!

Much better than it sounds, I assure you…

In an effort to get myself out and about more often, I put in an application at the Learning Center’s help desk…General duties include helping people with computer woes, and sitting around until someone actually has computer woes…I got an e-mail yesterday asking for me to come in for an interview this coming week, and it should be a good way to put myself to good use (rather than just sit in my room doing less than nothing everyday)…

Day 177 - February 6th, 2008 But every now and then I feel so insecure

As you may remember, I declared 2008 to be the Year of A Million Concerts…So far, it’s been a little less than a million, but after this week, I am right on track…Thursday, I went to see new kids Vampire Weekend at the First Unitarian Church…for a group that became so popular so quickly, they put on a show that rivals some of the more experienced acts I have seen…I’m still not entirely sure if they will be on the scene for a while, or if Dogs Die In Hot Cars syndrome is going to sink in…I sure hope that they stick around, because seeing them was a lot of fun…

Day 178 - February 7th, 2008 Can you stay up to see the dawn/In the colors of Bennetton?

Guitarist Ezra Koenig was right in my face, and I got a ton of good (and a metric ton of not really good pictures)…stay tuned for a video on the Josh Pincus Is Crying YouTube Channel

Friday at XPN was brought to you by the letter C…C is for Counting Crows, who did the Free at Noon concert…while I did not see the actual performance, I listened to a few songs over the air…As I was returning some CD’s to the library, I passed by Adam Duritz, who was talking with some of the organizers of the show (some XPN folk, some label reps, some road managers and so on)…When I went back into the Y-Rock studio, the blinds in the window between the Y-Rock studio and the XPN studio were open, and I saw Adam being interviewed by Helen Leicht, XPN’s mid-day and Philly Local Show host…as he was talking to her, he glanced through the window at me, and I smiled to him and waved…not unlike Bob Mould, he smiled and waved back (of course, he couldn’t say anything the way Bob did, since he was in a totally separate studio, but I’m confident that if he could have said hello, he would have)…

C is also for Cat Power (or Chan Marshall, if you’re picky)…in support of her terrific new album, Jukebox, Chan came in to record a World Cafe session…I went into the studio’s control room to watch her record the songs and be interviewed by David Dye…while she may be a bit nutty (though, according to David, not as nutty as she used to be), she has got a really great voice…She performed a sold-out show at the Starlight Ballroom last night that a few of the other people who were watching from the control room went to…I did not, although C is still for Concert…

Towards the end of my shift on Y-Rock (I’ll post the playlist soon..some said it was my best show ever!!), Lauren comes into the studio and asks if I’m going to the MAD Dragon showcase that night…MAD Dragon is a record label run by Drexel University students…home to many Philly Local favorites (pretty much anyone not on Park The Van), the label had a concert last night featuring some newcomers and a few mainstays that are releasing albums later this year…I really had not thought about going to this show, but I decided that I would…and I was quite happy that I did…after a guest group from Pittsburgh, XPN favorites Andrew Lipke, Hoots And Hellmouth, and Matt Duke performed (though not all at once…that would have been ridiculous)…Actually, we’ve been promoting this show on Y-Rock because the other two bands, The Swimmers and The Redwalls, are both in our current rotation…to promote Y-Rock at the show was Miss Adrienne, everyone’s favorite volunteer-turned-DJ…the show was a lot of fun, and I took a lot of pictures of all of the bands…

Day 179 - February 8th, 2008 They say it's all been done before

That’s Logan Baren of The Redwalls…you may have heard their song “Build A Bridge” in an AT&T commercial, or on XPN when they played it just about every hour when that album came out in 2005…great performances all around, even if there were some technical difficulties and a couple of pottymouths…

After the show, I talked with two members of The Swimmers, and I got a WKDU shirt from guy who said that I gave him a poster at the FREEZEtival…

Today was another day of XPN’s Winter Fund Drive…naturally, I was running the board during Sleepy Hollow this morning (since apparently I’m the only board-op who’s okay with waking up ridiculously early on the weekends)…I love working with the Sleepy Hollow people, partly because they are have really great tastes in music…After listening to so much rock and roll everyday, it’s refreshing to hear some quiet music every once in a while…I also ran the board for the hour after Sleepy Hollow, when the Fund Drive was hosted by XPN’s Program Director, Bruce Warren…as you may remember, there is a webcam set up so that the board-op and the DJ’s can see each other…I see Bruce come into the Fund Drive room and I catch a glance at his shirt…

Day 180 - February 9th, 2008 But hey!

In case you can’t see, he’s wearing the “I Listen To Bands That Don’t Even Exist Yet” shirt…I told him that that makes two shirts that we both have (we also the same Yep Roc shirt)…joining Bruce in that picture is The Matt Reilly…yay!

Tomorrow morning, I’m back at the board for the Sunday edition of Sleepy Hollow, then the Folk Show is later that night, featuring Beaucoup Blue (apparently performing with a full band)…

As a final note, I noticed something neat today…I remember when Mom would sometimes drive me to Akiba, that Warren Zevon’s Excitable Boy was the exact length of the trip from home to school…likewise, the trip from XPN to home via train (with a ten minute waiting time) takes the same amount of time as it does to listen to Arcade Fire’s new album, Neon Bible…are there any places you go to that you can listen to an album in its entirety along the way?

Come with me my love
To the sea
The sea of love
I want to tell you
How much I love you
