A Super-Duper Friday 5!
September 13th 2008 by E..
Elbow - “Some Riot” from The Seldom Seen Kid
The quirky British group just won the Mercury Prize for best album of the year, and they completely deserve it…Taking a distinctly grown-up approach to pop music, Elbow bring in a lot of strings and slide guitars to craft a gorgeous record…if only Oasis could put side their troubles, they could make an album like this…then again, they may already have and just haven’t released it yet…
Oingo Boingo - “Perfect System” from Only A Lad
One of my favorite new wave albums, Oingo Boingo’s full-length debut is manic in every meaning of the word…bouncing between punk, ska and music that still defies description, Danny Elfman and company were the quintessential California new wave band…this song showcases the other thing Oingo Boingo was great for: lyrics, lyrics, lyrics!…a quasi-1984 world is presented by someone who is seemingly the ambassador to the controlled system…and it’s funny, too!
Darker My Love - “Two Ways Out” from 2
Taking a cue from tour-mates The Dandy Warhols, Darker My Love channel psychedelic rock through an indie/shoegaze filter…from their aptly-named sophomore album, this song is very much in the vein of some of the denser tracks from Primal Scream’s classic Screamadelica, especially the reworking of The 13th Floor Elevators’ “Slip Inside This House”…the melody is also somewhat reminiscent of Supergrass’ “Alright” for some odd reason…
Blondie - “Europa” from Autoamerican
A hell of a weird way to start an album, considering the punk/disco stuff they had been doing for their previous four, “Europa” kicks off Blondie’s most eclectic disc…most of the track is a mostly instrumental overture, complete with orchestra swells before turning into a spoken word piece by Debbie Harry about the history of the car in America…and you thought that “Rapture” was unusual for its time…
The Secret Machines - “Dreaming Of Dreaming”
This epic tune (though not so epic by The Secret Machines’ standards) is a leftover from the sessions of their forthcoming self-titled (and self-released) album…this is also the first album to feature new guitarist Phil Karnats, who replaced founding member Benjamin Curtis left to further his various side projects…the remaining trio are in top form, still, as this song echoes the proggy krautrock of their debut…
