Friday 5 moves into 2009!!

The Prodigy - “Invaders Must Die” from Invaders Must Die
I’ll admit that The Prodigy haven’t exactly been very relevant over the past few years…and it saddens me to say that because so many new, popular dance bands owe a lot to their brutal, maddeningly addictive electronics…thankfully, though, the preview/title track from their forthcoming album shows promise of the Prodigy album we’ve all been waiting for…

The BPA - “He’s Frank (Slight Return) (featuring Iggy Pop)” from I Think We’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat
The new project from Fatboy Slim is sure to be the poppy, dancy, soulful hit of the summer of 2009…with guest vocalists on each track (some for famous than others), it’s an eclectic mix of funk, sass and R&B…the set kicks off with a cover led by Iggy himself, and it’s not just any song they’re doing: it’s a tune from post-punk oddballs The Monochrome Set…I’m not sure why it cuts off so abruptly, but I think it’s a gag as a few other songs do the same…

Antony & The Johnsons - “Another World” from The Crying Light
I have to say that the first time I heard Antony Hegarty’s voice, I was immediately put off…however, the songs I heard were both covers (“Perfect Day” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, to be precise), and Antony’s unique pipes work far better on his original material…after guesting on the fantastic debut of Hercules & Love Affair, Antony returns with a new album of theatrical, sorrowful ballads for the cold, dark days of the new year…

Animal Collective - “Lion In A Coma” from Merriweather Post Pavilion
Another band that took a while for me to warm up to, Avey, Panda and Geologist regroup for the follow-up to their acclaimed Strawberry Jam…the album is less upbeat and immediate, but there are plenty of pop genius moments, like the didgeridoo sample throughout this standout…

Andrew Bird - “Fitz And The Dizzyspells” from Noble Beast
Calling Noble Beast a more “organic” album than 2007’s Armchair Apocrypha, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird returns with a solid, effortlessly clever record…his wordplay is peerless, and his compositions are so magnificent, some editions of the new album will come bundled with Useless Creatures, an additional set of new instrumentals…
