John Cale - “Dying On The Vine” from Artificial Intellegence
The alternately elegant and menacing songwriting of John Cale is some of the most fascinating in modern pop music. From 1985, this song veers more toward the accessible end of his prolific career’s wide spectrum. His 1992 live album, Fragments Of A Rainy Season, also contains a lovely version.
Franz Ferdinand - “Bite Hard” from Tonight: Franz Ferdinand
Just by listening to their 2004 debut, you could tell that great things were in store for Franz Ferdinand. The Glasgow quartet exhibited an uncanny knack for dancefloor-ready hooks and impossibly catchy lyrics. Their latest album, a soundtrack to a house-destroying party while mom and dad are away, features plenty more electronic and rhythmic experimentation.
Pet Shop Boys - “Love Etc.” from Yes
Depeche Mode aren’t the only ‘80s band who are putting out a new album this year. Neil and Chris return with a set whose strength rivals some of their classic early material. The lead single from Yes is a soaring synthpop gem that immediately earns its place among the ranks of “West End Girls” and “What Have I Done To Deserve This?”
Buggles - “I Am A Camera” from Adventures In Modern Recording
One of the most creative and short-lived bands of the ‘80s, the Buggles were primarily the outlet for pop guru Trevor Horn. Their second (and final) album was recorded while Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes were performing with Yes, and a version of this song was released by that band as “Into The Lens.” The final mix, though not a chart hit, further showed off Horn’s innovativeness, which would further manifest itself in Art Of Noise and his countless production works.
The Cramps - “Journey To The Center Of A Girl” from Stay Sick
If you’re a fan of whacked-out psychobilly and you’ve never listened to any Cramps albums aside from Songs The Lord Taught Us, then you’re doing yourself a great disservice. Lux, Ivy and the gang cooked up (what else?) thirteen LPs in their span, and each one is as good as the next. From 1990, this disc is packed with potent riffs, scuzzy imagery and, of course, plenty of fuzz.
