One poorly-timed Jungle Cruise
August 12th 2008 by E..
As I sit in a bed in a hotel across the street from Disneyland, I finally have a moment to catch up…
We get a lot of odd mail delivered to our house…sometimes we get letters addressed to the people who lived in our house before we did (and that was about 22 years ago), and sometimes we get mail for people who never lived in our house at all…
Day 360 - August 8th, 2008

Not only did Harold Schuman never live in our house, he’s been dead for about 15 years…I guess that second chance came a little late…
We got that on Friday, and spent about 3 hours sleeping before we got up to leave for the airport…our flight was ridiculously early, and we naturally had to get to the airport several hours before our flight…someday we’ll find out that that’s not at all necessary…I smell an idea for an episode of MythBusters…
When we got to California, we went to a few points of historical interest before making a stop in Hollywood…first we saw the site of the house where The Beach Boys grew up…the house isn’t there anymore, but there’s a (sadly, graffiti-covered) monument there…we also went to see the oldest McDonalds in operation…while it is not the first, it has a little museum with artifacts from the chain’s history…
Day 361 - August 9th
We went to the mind-boggling Ameoba Music, where we got some rock and roll magazines from the 80’s (with one signed by Richard Butler!), I got a used import copy of Sparks‘ album Balls, and two $5 shirts, one of Kaiser Chiefs and one of Kasabian…oh, and some Dr. Dog posters left over from their in-store appearance last week…I am so proud of those boys!…
Sunday was our first day in the park, and what fun it always is…now that I have a year’s worth of experience with my camera, I can take better pictures that I could have last year, especially in darker settings…as always, we started our day with baked goods on Main Street, followed by a visit to the Enchanted Tiki Room…
Day 362 - August 10th, 2008
I took a ton of pictures, and I will most likely create a gallery of them when my trip is done…
I think I got my highest score yet on Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters, and I (accidentally) bumped the car in front of me on the Autopia…got my picture taken with Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear, and got a fortune card from the legendary Fortune Red…
Today we went to a few cemeteries in the Los Angeles area…first was Hillside Memorial Park, a massive Jewish cemetary where Jack Benny, Aaron Spelling, most everyone from the Max Factor family and more are forever neighbors…one particularly peculiar memorial if the Al Jolson waterfall…
Day 363 - August 11th, 2008
Along with the waterfall is a statue of Jolson in his classic down-on-one-knee pose, and on the inside of that dome there is an elaborate mosaic of Moses with the Ten Commandments…my people…
We went to another immense cemetary, where Bela Lugosi, Bing Crosby and Darby Crash are buried, but it was so big and poorly marked that finding any of the graves proved impossible…
After that we went to the Santa Monica pier, and rode on the carousel that was featured in “The Sting”…the pier is neat in that it stretches very far out above the ocean, but it was a bit strange, too…there were a lot of people fishing and there was a sorta creepy little amusement park (which is kind of redundant)…we got veggie corn dogs from Hot Dog On A Stick (this is turning out to be the Food Network tour of California), and came back to Downtown Disney for more shopping and eating…
Tomorrow we’re going to Disney’s California Adventure, where I’m very excited for their newest ride, Toy Story (Midway) Mania…
Today was also Josh Pincus‘ birthday…go and wish him happy birthday with one of these…
