I try really hard to not get wrapped up in the hype that surrounds highly-anticipated albums. I figure that enough people are listening to them that I would prefer to listen to something that is overlooked instead. However, there are plenty of albums and songs wthat are well-deserving of the praise they receive. Though I vaguely remember when Grizzly Bear released Yellow House, I didn’t hear it until just recently. That album, while enjoyable, shows only a fraction of what the band is capable of. For the full picture, dig on their new album, Veckatimest. Even the lead single, sure to be a best-of-2009 list-topper for some, is a shimmering piece of pop gold. Tinges of The Beach Boys and even Apple Venus-era XTC are heard in the baroque arrangement and pastoral harmonies. On top of that, the song has a pretty bonkers video (see below), which encapsulates Grizzly Bear’s slow-burning style. You might not realize it when the song starts, but you’ll be a fan by the time it’s over.

Clinic - “The Equaliser” from Walking With Thee
The masked men of Clinic were way ahead of everyone (read: swine flu) when it comes to surgical garb as fashion statements. Their mysterious appearance matches particularly well with their unusual music, an amalgam of vintage organ sorcery and squeaky, jittery percussion. Their debut, Internal Wrangler, gave them a minor hit with “Distortions” (which was later covered by the Arcade Fire), but Walking With Thee gave them a much wider audience.

Lullaby Baxter Trio - “Ding-A-Ling” from Capable Egg
A lot of Lullaby Baxter’s debut is steeped in early jazz and urban blues, but there’s a fair amount of cabaret and pop to be found, too. This song appears twice, the hidden track version featured Baxter alone with an acoustic guitar, lamenting over everyone who calls her “ding-a-ling.” Of course, her melding of childish lyrics and melodies with her smooth, mature vocals creates an uncommonly delightful listening experience.

Leonard Cohen - “So Long, Marianne” from Songs Of Leonard Cohen
It’s hard to believe that the master songwriter’s debut album came out over 40 years ago, but it’s true. Musically, Cohen’s early material was pretty pleasant folky stuff, but, of course, his lyrics stood out above all else. This song’s tremendous chorus makes for a great sing-along, and it’s one of many songs that was most likely written about Marianne Faithfull.

Sunset Rubdown - “You Go On Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II) from Dragonslayer
The side project of Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug returns with a new album this summer. Slightly more prog-y than his main band (if that’s even possible), Sunset Rubdown shows off Krug’s more wild musical tendencies. A sequel of sorts to a track on 2007’s Random Spirit Lover, “You Go On Ahead” is a standout from an album that is sure to unite Wolf Parade fans and lovers of unusual indie rock everywhere.

Elvis Costello - “Complicated Shadows” from Secret, Profane & Sugarcane
Originally written for Johnny Cash, this song appeared on 1996’s All This Useless Beauty. Now that Elvis has taken a turn for the twangy, this tune was bound to resurface. With a dynamite band (The Sugarcanes, natch), the new record is like a less-slick Almost Blue, which is pretty welcome if you ask me.
Yeah, Wilco are taking the whole ‘we don’t take ourselves too seriously’ thing waaaaay too seriously, but you can easily forgive them once you get a load of their new album. Somewhere between A.M.’s saucy twang and Sky Blue Sky’s dreamy airiness, Wilco (The Album) is sure to send fans’ hearts a-flutter, especially with summer-ready songs like this one.

Kid Creole & The Coconuts - “Endicott” from In Praise Of Older Women And Other Crimes
Blending jazz, latin and new wave music with a heaping helping of tongue-in-cheek cheez, August “Kid Creole” Darnell and his ever-changing lineup of backup players brought some much needed humor to the mid-‘80s music scene. I’ll put to you this way: “Endicott” was released the same year as Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven and Psychocandy. Yeah.

On tour for Living Thing, the Swedish trio frequently re-imagines their older songs in the sample- and beat-heavy style of their new album. A standout from their 2006 breakthrough, “Chills” didn’t need too much reworking to make it fit it with the newer material, as its unusual time signature and structure make it quite infectious.

Sonic Youth - “No Way” from The Eternal
Back when I saw Sonic Youth last year, they opened their set with a pair of new songs. Now that their new album is coming out, at least one of those two songs has surfaced as a studio recording. “No Way” is a definite standout on a solid, instantly lovable record.

The Selecter - “Tell Me What’s Wrong” from Celebrate The Bullet
One of the shortest-lived groups of the 2-Tone ska era, The Selecter set themselves apart with lead singer Pauline Black and songwriter/guitarist Neol Davies. Though they had left Jerry Dammers’ pioneering label for the release of this album, it continues their checkerboard mission. Though their lineup shifted for a few smaller recordings, The Selecter’s two original LPs rank among the best ska albums of the era.

Well, it’s taken me long enough.

Right now, I’ve been done with my third year of college for two whole days. All the worrying about finals and projects and grades has all but passed, just like I have in each of my classes. As much as I supposedly learn in my classes year after year, I never seem to learn how not to get all flustered by the end of each semester. They should really capitalize on that and get a class together. What would happen if you got really stressed in that class? Damn.

To celebrate, I went to the Franklin Fountain with my grandparents today. It’s such a great place to go for any occasion, and provides so many opportunities to use the old-timey megaphone voice. A breakfast/early lunch engagement turned into waffles with ice cream, which is breakfast-esque. On the way out, a PPA guy that is prominently featured in Parking Wars was putting our van on the clock. He seemed happy that we recognized him, and that we weren’t cursing at him like most of the people he meets. What’s it like to become a ‘celebrity’ by just doing your job while someone puts it on television?

This summer looks like it will be a real gullywhumper. Not only will I be getting school credit for my internship at XPN, but I’ve got some swell happenings that will be, um, happening. Towards the end of June, I’ll be going to Las Vegas for my parent’s 25th anniversary (the first time I’ve been there since turning 21!), and XPN’s festival is looking to be much more enjoyable than last year’s (which was pretty enjoyable in itself).

Yes, there’s no telling what sorts of exciting diversions will come along in the coming months. And, by the way, I hereby promise to update this publication as often as I can! Until then, you can always follow me on the Twitter, and download my weekly music-style podcast!

Here’s to a snow-free Summer!
